The second series of the hit show Rome is set during Octavian’s rule, a time of bloody battles and spectacular architecture.
Shot throughout Italy, the show boasts the largest standing film set in the world at the famous Cinecitta studios, and the HBO/BBC production were keen to have the award winning Senate Visual Effects team back on board.
For series two, The Senate contributed over 80 shots, with the scope of work ranging from epic matte paintings and exacting CG environments to bloody wounds and crowd replication. The show, renowned for its gritty realism, demanded visual effects that integrated seamlessly with the raw visual style of the show.
The Senate’s work can be seen throughout the series. Octavian’s courtyard, spectacular vistas of distant Rome and post battle scenes both at sea and on land, demonstrate the delicate historical detailing required in The Senate’s effects. Whereas the multiple stabbings, throat cutting and severed hands provided an opportunity to showcase the team’s gorier talents.
